Does your home improvement project require a permit?

Post Date:04/04/2024 10:34 AM

As spring continues, so does the cleaning, remodeling, and building. Maybe you want to add an outbuilding, a fence or a pool. Before you begin building, it’s best to know if a permit is needed and get all the needed documents signed and in place. Beginning a project before securing a permit may invalidate the permit and you will have to start all over again!

Here’s our list of which residential projects require a permit and/or other documents:

  • New home

  • Addition to an existing home

  • Accessory structure such as a detached garage, storage building, arbor, pergola or pool house

  • Fence or wall

  • Retaining wall

  • Swimming pool

  • Window

In addition to a permit particular to each project (building permit, fence permit, swimming pool permit), there may be other documents required for a project. These can include sketches of an existing or proposed building or Notices of Coverage with regards to Town ordinances which relate to home building or improvements.
