WHAT IS THE DOWNTOWN COLLIERVILLE SMALL AREA PLAN?

This is the formal name for a study launched in 2009 and completed in 2010. This project was initiated by the Town of Collierville to put greater focus on Collierville's historic square and its surrounding neighborhoods. The goal of this project was to create a shared, and formally adopted, vision for its future. To develop this vision, the Town held a community visioning exercise in the fall of 2009 to gain ideas from the public on the future of the downtown. Also studied by the Town were many of the previous studies of downtown done over the last decade. By late 2009, a steering committee was formed with the task of developing and refining a vision and plan for downtown. The steering committee, which began meeting in December 2010, had a week-long brainstorming session in January 2010 called "Design Workshop Week" to review in depth maps, sketches, example photos, and draft policies to create the plan. By the end of that week, a vision had emerged: "the Square and Downtown Area should be both a destination and the heart of a vibrant and living neighborhood."

WHAT DOES THIS NEWLY-ADOPTED VISION MEAN FOR DOWNTOWN COLLIERVILLE?

  • A Destination: This is part of the vision that recognizes that our Historic Square and its historical significance is already a draw locally and regionally. The plan will address ways to help people find downtown through improved directional signage and better road connections to the remainder of Town. It will also identify reasons for coming to downtown, such as the new Morton Museum of Collierville History.

  • Heart of a vibrant and living neighborhood: With many active and successful shops and businesses in the vicinity of Town Square and beyond, and many homes in the area, Collierville's downtown is already a vibrant neighborhood. By adding new residents and retail activity to the south side of the railroad tracks and downtown Washington Street, the plan will seek to ensure that downtown Collierville will continue to be a living neighborhood for generations to come. A major goal of the plan is also to connect the Square and Suggs and Tom Brooks Parks to the Town's existing greenbelt system and to other parks. Another major goal is to improve road access within the study, and to better connect Downtown Collierville to other areas of Town.

HOW CAN I GET A COPY OF THE PLAN?

The Town adopted the Downtown Plan via Resolution 2010-15 adopted by the Planning Commission July 1, 2010 and Resolution 2010-34 adopted by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen July 26, 2010. The adopted plan, approved in July 2010, can be found by clicking here.
