In October 2020, the BMA accepted a grant in the amount of $15,000, from the State of Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation for the 2020 Historic Resources Survey. This project was supported in part by the Historic Preservation Fund, administered by the National Park Service, Department of the Interior, and the Tennessee Historical Commission. These grant funds were matched with $10,000 in local funds. Additionally, the project was supplemented with up to $35,000 in local funds for a total combined project cost of no more than $60,000. The additional funds authorized by the BMA allowed the community to survey every structure 50 years old or older as of 2020.

The survey focused on all structures 50 years old or older as of 2020 within the Town of Collierville and its Reserve Area. The survey was performed by an independent consultant according to preservation “best practices” according to the State of Tennessee Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO). The final results of the survey were presented to Collierville’s Historic District Commission (HDC) at a public meeting on October 28, 2021.

The more complete and up-to-date survey will aid stakeholders (property owners, HDC, BMA, staff, design professionals, etc.) in deciding which structures should be preserved and why.

The project officially started on December 15, 2020, but the survey field work did not start until early June 2021. The Town selected a preservation planning consultant, Thomason and Associates, to do the survey work. Per the grant contract, the project ended September 30, 2021.
