Speed cushion pilot program starting this week

Post Date:06/26/2024 5:18 PM

Public Services crews began installing speed cushions on John Ridge Drive this week as part of a pilot program to test their effectiveness . The program will also install the speed cushions on Itawamba Road. This pilot is the third part of the Engineering Division's year-long Neighborhood Traffic Management Plan (NTMP). The first two pilots were a Road Diet and a Speed Radar Sign Installation.

According to the Town's Traffic Engineer Neetu Singh, John Ridge Drive and Itawamba Road were chosen for the pilot for several reasons including:

  • Speed and volume studies
  • Their location near elementary schools (higher number of walkers and bike riders)
  • Discussion with the Collierville Police Department. These were a few of the streets which CPD said had a lot of calls from residents to patrol for speeding issues.

Once the pilot is complete and data is obtained from several sources (Police and Fire Departments, residents,  as well as speed and volume studies), the Engineering Division will decide how to proceed.

Singh said they would start gathering data from speed and volume studies once school is back in session, and check in with the Police and Fire Departments regarding speed - related calls in the areas.

"I think by end of November, we will have enough data to see if this is something we want to consider for other locations," said Singh. "The speed cushions will only be considered for residential roads. These devices are not meant for Arterials or Major collectors. We do not want to negatively impact fire/police response times."

The ultimate goal is to have residents submit their streets to be studied to see if they meet the  guidelines for speed cushions to be installed, provided there is funding available.
